Did the Catholic Church Add Books to the BIBLE?

Q. When did Catholics add books to the Bible?

A. They never did. The Jews and the Protestants removed books from the OT.
The Catholic Church simply received the Septuagint version of the Hebrew scriptures, from the Jews, at the time of Christ. This became known as the Old Testament. 70 years later, the Jews removed 7 Old Testament books from the Septuagint. The reason given for this was that they could no longer find those books in Hebrew.

Interestingly some of these books were being used to good advantage to make converts among the Jews. For example:

This passage prophesies and describes the attitude of the enemies of Jesus hundreds of years before His birth:

The Book of Wisdom
2.1a, 12-22

The wicked said among themselves, thinking not aright:

Let us beset the just one, because he is obnoxious to us; he sets himself against our doings, Reproaches us for transgressions of the law and charges us with violations of our training. He professes to have knowledge of God and styles himself as a child of the Lord. To us he is the censure of our thoughts; merely to see him is a hardship for us, Because his life is not like other men’s and different are his ways. He judges us debased; he holds aloof from our paths as from things impure. He calls blest the destiny of the just and boasts that God is his Father. Let us see whether his words be true; let us find out what will happen to him. For if the just one be the son of God he will defend him and deliver him from the hand of his foes. With revilement and torture let us put him to the test that we may have proof of his gentleness and try his patience. Let us condemn him to a shameful death; for according to his own words, God will take care of him. These were their thoughts, but they erred, for their wickedness blinded them, and they knew not the hidden counsels of God neither did they count on a recompense of holiness nor discern the innocent souls’ reward.

Prayers for the dead and support for Purgatory (since people in Heaven don’t need prayers and people in Hell can’t be helped by prayers) are scriptural based on the following passage.

II Maccabees 12:44-45

For if he were not expecting that those who had fallen would rise again, it would have been superfluous and foolish to pray for the dead.
But if he was looking to the splendid reward that is laid up for those who fall asleep in godliness, it was a holy and pious thought. Therefore he made atonement for the dead, that they might be delivered from their sin.

In 1529, Martin Luther removed the same 7 books from the Catholic Old Testament, that the Jews had removed1400 years earlier. Luther also removed 4 New Testament books (Hebrews, James, Jude, and Revelation) that did not agree with his theology, for his German translation. These books were removed from their original place in the order of the books and placed together at the end of the Bible. In later editions, he was persuaded to return the New Testament books to to their proper position in his translation of the Bible. Today Protestant Bibles don’t contain 7 Old Testament books at all.

Q. What is the Septuagint?

A. In the centuries leading up to the birth of Christ the Jews were living all over the known world. Greek was the language of commerce and scholarship. Over time it became harder and harder to maintain a wide knowledge of Hebrew among the Jews because more and more were speaking only Greek. The Jews in Alexandria set about to make a Greek translation of the Hebrew scriptures. This translation was completed between 250-125 BC by 70 Jewish scholars. Septuagint means 70 in Latin.

Scholars are certain that Jesus and the early Christians accepted the Septuagint version of the Old Testament because etymological studies of 300 quotes from the Old Testament made by the New Testament writers can be traced back to the Septuagint version. There are also OT quotes that can be traced back to the Hebrew OT but these are far fewer in number. So, if Jesus had rejected the Septuagint the New Testament writers seemed to know nothing about it since they all used it quite freely.

  1. Show me prove that jews removed books. Show me that god told catholics that jews removed books. Plus catholics added those books to the new testament. Not the old. SO what are you talking about. Unless You show me the man god told to add those books appears. Those books where put in by a panel of Catholic MEN. The church was built by JEWS for Jesus not catholics. Catholic is a man made word. The true church was JEWS for JESUS. Any group that bows to a man and kisses his ring is wrong. I bow for no MAN. I bow for the one and only TRUE GOD AND HIS SON. No man is worth WHAT IS GODs GLORY. The bow at the throne. You all carry the pope around and put more worship to him and tradition. Then you do the bible. You even put him on a golden throne. Seems wrong to me. Do catholics know that the bible tells you to read it. When you read it and ask god for help. The wholly spirit will fill you and help you understand. YOU MUST read it yourself. Cover to cover. Do not let someone else give there man made inturp. If you have a mustered seeds worth of faith. You will do what god says. Read the bible and ask GOD for help. Not just a man the pope. Only GODS word is law. Only catholics think the pope can speak on Gods behalf. Here it is in a nut shell. No matter what if your name is not in the book of life. You do not go to heaven. Read revelations. No matter how many good works you do. God picks not catholics. Plus you are told that the bible is to hard for you to understand. That’s why you have a central authority to tell you what it means. That’s crap. God would not leave a book for you and then not let you read it for your self. In the bible he tells you to read it. God tells you he will help YOU understand it by praying and asking for help.

  2. Big deal if books where removed from the old testament. According to catholics. The new covent made the old testament just that old. Only the new one counts. In that thought. So what if books where removed in the old. Its only the new that counts. Right Catholics. Who bow and kiss a MANs ring and carry him around. Bow and put him on a golden throne. REALLY. Sounds a lot like false worship. Not to mention he wears white linen. Like jesus in the good book did. You all use the same symboles for the pope that are reserved for GOD. The one and only. Here it is no matter what. If your name is not in the book of life. You do no enter heaven. NO ONE goes with out their name in that book. Not even the pope. Only GOD puts the names in that book.

  3. Robert,
The Jews removed the deuterocanonicals from their OT. These had been included in the Jewish translation of the OT into Greek. This name for the Greek translation of the Hebrew Scriptures is the Septuagint. The history is not in dispute. You can google it.

Later Martin Luther, perhaps using the then current OT of the Jews, which no longer had those 7 books, removed the same 7 books from the Catholic OT and created the Protestant OT. The Catholic Church has NOT added any books to the New Testament. Our NT and the Protestant NT is exactly the same. You are mistaken.

What books are you even talking about? Please name them, so we can be clear.

We do not worship the Pope or the Bible. We worship God the Father, God the Son and God the Holy Spirit. It is blasphemy to worship any creature. Protestants slander the Catholic Church with these lies that you have been told.

We read through nearly the whole Bible every three years in Church. Every Catholic hears the Bible over and over and over. You have been lied to. We do read the Bible and honor it as sacred.

The Catholic Church interprets the Bible as she always and everywhere has interpreted it for 2000 years. How do you KNOW that you are not adhering to man made interpretations. After all, Sola Scripture is a “tradition of man” started by Martin Luther.

By the way, we do read the Bible. This is lie that you are believing.

The New Testament is a fulfillment of the Old Testament but the Old Testament is precious. Who told you all of these lies about the Catholic Church. There are some Protestants who completely disregard the OT. Perhaps you are confusing them with the Catholic Church.

  4. Great post. Have you guys heard of the Church of the Holy Sepulcher? Now you can send your prayers there through Holylandprayer.com Hope this helps.

  5. we have faith in Jesus
    not in our religion ;]

    there’s no purgatory.

…for it is appointed for man to die once,
    and after that comes judgment.
    –Hebrews 9:27

do not make any idols nor icons.

Thou shalt not make unto thee any graven image, or any likeness of any thing that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth: Thou shalt not bow down thyself to them, nor serve them: for I the Lord thy God am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children unto the third and fourth generation of them that hate me; And shewing mercy unto thousands of them that love me, and keep my commandments. (Exodus 20:4-6)

    only JESUS saves.

    11 Jesus is

    “‘the stone you builders rejected,
    which has become the cornerstone.’[a]
Salvation is found in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given to mankind by which we must be saved.”
    –acts 4:11-12

No other man can represent God.

15 The Son is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn over all creation.
    –colossians 1:15

you won’t go to heaven by your own good works. only by the grace of God through faith in Jesus Christ that we are saved.

8 For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith—and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God— 9 not by works, so that no one can boast.
    –ephesians 2:8-9

those who did not receive Jesus Christ are not given the rights by God to be called sons of God,

Yet to all who did receive him, to those who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God—– John 1:12

we do not pray to any man or woman or any saint..

For there is one God and one mediator between God and mankind, the man Christ Jesus,– 1 timothy 2:5

Receive Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior . Have FAITH in Jesus. being familiar with the name Jesus Christ is not enought..

    how can we be saved?

    — Believe in the Lord Jesus Christ
and you shall be saved , you and your household.
    –Acts 16:31

…and Jesus said, “I am the way, the truth and the life,,.. No one comes to the Father except through me.” ==John 14:6

let us all have faith in Jesus Christ, our Lord and Savior..who laid down his life for us.
    Jesus Loves YOU.;]

  6. I have responded to your comment here–>Catholics Have Faith in Religion

  7. my gosh your understanding of the Catholic Church is so limited…and you keep on quoting Bible verses not knowing the whole story, like this: you say that there is no purgatory ryt? well let me ask you this, wen Lazaruz died in the new testament, before Jesus brought him back to life, where did he go? heaven? if that is so, then we would have been pretty angry that Jesus had brought him back. Hell? that is also a big problem, since once you are in hell you are COMPLETELY separatd from God….

You also cite the 1st commandment, ok, but first off, i wnt to make a few things clear, 1. we dont have 2 Gods, we have One, God Himself. 2. Mary is not our god, but she is the Mother of God. 3. when we pray to Mary and the other saints we ask for INTERCESSION. they same way you and your group ask people to pray for you.

ok, now back to what you said, now if God prohibits the making of ALL images, then why did He command mosses to make a serpent? hmm? u’ll find that in Numbers 21:8…

oh yeah, and about salvation: here : “Faith without works is dead,” (James 2:20).

  8. I actually have a tendency to go along with every little
thing that is authored in “Did the Catholic Church Add Books to the BIBLE?
Bread From Heaven”. Thanks a lot for all of
    the actual facts.Many thanks-Marylyn
