Jesus NEVER called Mary His Mother

David D: 1. NOWHERE is MARY EVER ONCE venerated or prayed to ANYWHERE in the New Testament.

The one example we have of someone venerating Mary is in Luke 11 where Jesus is preaching and a woman in the crowd INTERRUPTS Jesus and heres what happened;

(LUKE 11:27-28) 27 As Jesus was saying these things, a woman in the crowd called out, “Blessed
is the mother who gave you birth and nursed you.” 28 He replied, “Blessed rather are those who hear the word of God and obey it.”

Jesus negated this woman’s assumption and turned the attention on the WORD OF GOD.

BFHU: Jesus never once said that God is a Trinity either. Did He use the word incarnation. Do you therefore reject the Doctrine of the Trinity and the Incarnation of the second person of the Trinity? Remember, the Protestant idea that all religious truth must be found explicitly in scripture or else it is illigitimate is not to be found in scripture alone.

David D: Jesus NEVER ONCE called Mary HIS OWN mother. Wonder why? lol

BFHU:Everything Jesus said and “did is not written because the world could not contain the books.” John 20:30 So you cannot actually KNOW that Jesus never called Mary “mother”. But what are you saying? You don’t believe Mary was the mother of Jesus?

  1. I guess I would just like to add that even though Scripture never records Jesus as saying that Mary is his mother, Scripture does say that Mary was the mother of Jesus, more than once. If you hold Scripture as the Word of God, then you HAVE to admit that God has declared Mary to be mother of Jesus.

  2. Dear Lan,
If Mary is the Mother of Jesus, and Jesus is God, then Mary is the mother of God.

The phrase Mother of God was coined in the 4th Century in opposition to heretics who denied the divinity of Jesus Christ.

We do not mean by it that Mary gave birth to the TRINITY or was pre-eminent. Mary was a creature just like you and me with one difference. God chose to create her without the fallen nature bequeathed to all of us by Adam and Eve. Adam and Eve also were created without a fallen nature.

Since God the Son would reside in her womb for nine months it is fitting that she was a pure vessel to carry Our Lord. God could have done it differently, after all Jesus would later dwell with sinners.

    • If Mary was born without sin then Christ did not die for her. All have fallen short of the glory of God. There is not one person who is good, as Jesus said, only God himself. When Mary and her sons and daughters turned up in one gospel to try and persuade Jesus to withdraw from ministry they didn’t understand the kingdom of heaven or Gods will. Jesus responds to bring informed that Mary is outside asking for him, “Who are my mother and brothers and sisters? It is those who do the will of God.”

      • Jesus saved Mary from sin BEFORE she was born. Before she sinned. Adam and Eve also were without sin, until they did sin. So Jesus created His mother without sin and therefore He is also her savior.

  3. He never called her mother because God does not want us to worship her after she gave birth to him she went on to have other children she was no longer pure after she gave birth to him we are not to worship her are pray to her she was a woman just like the rest of us that God chose to carry his son Christ she would be so upset that people worship and pray to her like they do.

    • Tammy,
      Catholics do not worship Mary.

This is a Protestant lie about the Catholic Church. You did not start it so you have no sin for this. So you can take my word for it or else prove to yourself what catholics teach regarding worshipping Mary by researching Catholic teaching in the Catechism of the Catholic Church.

When we “pray to Mary” we are actually asking her to pray for us to Our Father. Please read–>>I Just Don’t Get Prayer to Saints….

      • No one comes to the Father except thru the Son! No one needs to pray to a priest for Hail Marys. She is not to be worshipped or is she to carry prayers to God. He wants to hear directly from us and us alone!

        • Dear Donna,
We do not pray to priests. Neither do we worship Mary that would be Heresy. She is a created being not diety. We merely ask Mary to pray to God for us just like we ask other Christian friends to pray for a prayer request we might have.

          • Romans 8 verse 28.
It is the Holy Spirit who intercedes for us in prayer. Only.

Christianity is about God showing us what He believes. Sometimes We have to put our belief system down in order to be able to pick his up. If you can imagine a general of an army with too many medals on his chest. In order to receive a new medal they may have to take off some old identity issues.

To be renewed may mean that we have clear insight the more we walk closely to Christ. Jesus also referred to us being able to pray directly to the father. He is Elshadai which means he can love you like a mother gather many people to his chest like a woman holding more than one child. Jesus referred to this when he said, “Jerusalem Jerusalem you who killed the profits how I longed to gather you like a mother hen gathers her chicks under her wing.”

            • Andy,
Then you do not believe in praying for one another? What about James 5:16
“Therefore confess your sins to one another, and pray for one another, that you may be healed. The prayer of a righteous man has great power in its effects.”

Or do you believe we may pray but it is the Holy Spirit who intercedes for every single prayer ever prayed by any and every person? In that Case he would intercede for Mary also. There is no problem.

      • “Catholics do not worship Mary.”
“prove to yourself what catholics teach regarding worshipping Mary by researching Catholic teaching in the Catechism of the Catholic Church.”

This Catechism of the Catholic Church?
        http://www.vatican.va/archive/ccc_css/archive/catechism/p4s1c2a2.htm

        It says that:
-Mary is the Ark of the Covenant.
        -Mary is the All-Holy One.
-We give ourselves over to her.
-We surrender “the hour of our death” wholly to her care.
That sounds like worship to me, and the last one goes against what Stephen did (he surrendered himself to Jesus in his our of death; Acts 7:59).

“Mary, in whom the Lord himself has just made his dwelling, is the daughter of Zion in person, the ark of the covenant, the place where the glory of the Lord dwells.
She is ‘the dwelling of God . . . with men.’ ”

“By asking Mary to pray for us, we acknowledge ourselves to be poor sinners and we address ourselves to the ‘Mother of Mercy,’ the All-Holy One.
We give ourselves over to her now, in the Today of our lives.
And our trust broadens further, already at the present moment, to surrender ‘the hour of our death’ wholly to her care.
May she be there as she was at her son’s death on the cross.
May she welcome us as our mother at the hour of our passing to lead us to her son, Jesus, in paradise.”

    • (LUKE 11:27-28) 27 As Jesus was saying these things, a woman in the crowd called out, “Blessed
is the mother who gave you birth and nursed you.” 28 He replied, “Blessed rather are those who hear the word of God and obey it.”

He had to rebuke her immediately Jesus negated this woman’s assumption and turned the attention on the WORD OF GOD.

  4. Mary didn’t just give birth to Jesus, she raised him in her house for 30 years, when Jesus called Mary woman instead of mother it was because Mary is the new eve and Jesus is the new Adam,he wanted us to realise that she was the new eve. Even though he never called her mother there are texts un the bible that refer to Mary as the mother of god for example,Luke 1:43 blessed are you among woman and blessed us the fruit of thy womb! And why is this granted me that the “MOTHER” OF MY “LORD” should come to me. Mary contributed to half the DNA of Jesus what do u all think a mother Is.

  5. t first glance, this would seem to be a very impersonal manner for Jesus to address his own mother. It should be noted, however, that Jesus uses the same term when he speaks to Mary from the Cross, saying, “Woman, behold your son.” (John 19:26) Likewise, he uses the term often when speaking to other women (e.g. Mt 15:28; Luke 22:57; John 4:21)
For a Jewish man to refer to his mother as “woman” would not be considered rude or disrespectful, however, it would suggest a distancing between the two. This is not inconsistent with how Jesus responds in Matthew 12:48-50 when he is told that his mother and family members were outside asking to speak to him:
“But he replied to the man who told him, “Who is my mother, and who are my brothers?” And stretching out his hand toward his disciples, he said, “Here are my mother and my brothers! For whoever does the will of my Father in heaven is my brother, and sister, and mother.”
By distancing himself from his mother, Jesus makes it very clear that family ties are not what cause him to act but rather, the will of his Father in heaven.

  6. How can Jesus be God? Jesus himself prayed to his father so many times as the scriptures showes, he taught his disciples to pray for his father in heaven,Luke 11: 1-13 there are at least 14 versus in the New Testament proving that Jesus is the son of God who also has a name.
How can anyone ignore that, was he praying to himself?
Mary was chosen to be Jesus mother as she was also a descendant of David as the prophecy foretells in the Old Testament, Mathews 1:1, Isaiah 7:14
Jesus taught to pray only to his father in the heavens through him.
Jesus is the only mediator, not his mother and no other saints, the bible is very clear about this.

Praying to Mary and other dead saints is not biblical and praying to anyone other than God is idolatry. To bow down to a statue or painting and pray to it is evil and it is forbidden in Scripture.
Nowhere in Scripture does it say pray to dead saints. Nowhere in Scripture does it say ask dead saints to pray for you.

    1. Exodus 20:4-5 You shall not make for yourself an image in the form of anything in heaven above or on the earth beneath or in the waters below. You shall not bow down to them or worship them; for I, the Lord your God, am a jealous God, punishing the children for the sin of the parents to the third and fourth generation of those who hate me.

    2. Isaiah 42:8 I am the Lord (yhwh) that is my name: and my glory will I not give to another, neither my praise to graven images.

    3. 1 Timothy 2:5 For, There is one God and one Mediator who can reconcile God and humanity—the man Christ Jesus.

    4. Hebrews 7:25 Consequently, he is able to save to the uttermost those who draw near to God through him, since he always lives to make intercession for them.

    5. John 14:13 And whatsoever ye shall ask in my name, that will I do, that the Father may be glorified in the Son.

The bible is clear to who really want to listen to Jesus, but those who use excuses and want to defend their beliefs on false claims would be as the book of the revelation 22:11 says 11 Let the one who is unrighteous continue in unrighteousness, and let the filthy one continue in his filth; but let the righteous one continue in righteousness, and let the holy one continue in holiness.
Revelation 22:18 – 19 I am bearing witness to everyone who hears the words of the prophecy of this scroll: If anyone makes an addition to these things, God will add to him the plagues that are written in this scroll; 19 and if anyone takes anything away from the words of the scroll of this prophecy, God will take his portion away from the trees of life and out of the holy city, things that are written about in this scroll.

    • Dear Nevart,
Thank you for your comment but since the Bible NOWHERE asserts that all practice and doctrine must be found in the Bible alone the Catholic Church, established by Jesus Christ Himself, is not bound by the Protestant doctrine of Sola Scriptura. Sola Scriptura is not found anywhere in the Bible.

Our God is One in three persons. Jesus did not pray to himself but to his Father. The Catholic Church does not contradict anything in Scripture including the verses you have supplied. We do not worship the saints, statues or pictures of them. That is a Protestant tradition of men. We worship God alone.

  7. attention BFHU: in regards to your statement that nowhere in the BIBLE DOES IT ASSERT THAT ALL PRACTICE AND DOCTRINE MUST BE FOUND IN THE BIBLE, I WOULD LIKE TO SHARE THESE SCRIPTURES WITH YOU : Gal 1:6 I marvel that ye are so soon removed from him that called you into the grace of Christ unto another gospel:
Gal 1:7 Which is not another; but there be some that trouble you, and would pervert the gospel of Christ.
Gal 1:8 But though we, or an angel from heaven, preach any other gospel unto you than that which we have preached unto you, let him be accursed.
Gal 1:9 As we said before, so say I now again, If any man preach any other gospel unto you than that ye have received, let him be accursed.
Gal 1:10 For do I now persuade men, or God? or do I seek to please men? for if I yet pleased men, I should not be the servant of Christ.
Gal 1:11 But I certify you, brethren, that the gospel which was preached of me is not after man.
Gal 1:12 For I neither received it of man, neither was I taught it, but by the revelation of Jesus Christ. the word gospel in the greek refers to G2097 eὐαγγελίζω
    euaggelizō
    yoo-ang-ghel-id’-zo
From G2095 and G32; to announce good news (“evangelize”) especially the gospel: – declare, bring (declare, show) glad (good) tidings, preach (the gospel). 2Ti_3:16 All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness:

2Pe_1:20 Knowing this first, that no prophecy of the scripture is of any private interpretation.

Dan_10:21 But I will shew thee that which is noted in the scripture of truth: and there is none that holdeth with me in these things, but Michael your prince.
the Bible says “let God be true and every man a liar” The only way as a sincere christian to know what is the truth is by the practice, doctrine, gospel, instruction, examples, and scripture of truth that the Bible teaches us as God inspired man to write it.

    • Dear Pamela,
I am very familiar with the verses you have advised me to consider.

      1) Please note that none of these verse assert, support, or prove the Protestant dogma that all spiritual truth or truth about God must be found only in scripture. That is a tradition of men. That is a tradition of Luther/Protestantism. It is not an infallible truth of sacred scripture.

      2) Since Galatians was written in the first century, have you ever wondered what Christianity looked like at its birth? I wondered. I wondered if it was more like the Catholic Faith or more like the Protestant faith. And what I found is that it was completely Catholic. Not Protestant. You can find out for yourself by reading the Early Church Fathers. The Catholic Church has always believed in the immaculate conception of Mary (so did Luther), the perpetual virginity of Mary (so did Luther and Calvin), oral confession, the Real Presence of Jesus Christ in the Eucharist, the Primacy of Peter, etc.

      3) What if Protestantism has “perverted the gospel of Christ?”
What if Protestantism “preaches another gospel than that which we have preached unto you?”

      4) “Knowing this first, that no prophecy of the scripture is of any private interpretation.”

And yet does not every single Protestant believe that they are able to privately interpret scripture? I know they honestly believe that the Holy Spirit is guiding their interpretation but if this were actually true then why
has the Holy Spirit guided Protestants to so many different interpretations that it is not ONE but fractured into thousands of denominations in contradiction to Jesus’ explicit desire that all be ONE? Jn 17

  8. Jesus never called Mary mother because He wants to connect Mary to the “woman”, in the Old and New Testament. In Genesis 3:15, The Proto Evangelium where God says He will enmity between the serpent and the “WOMAN”. That woman is Mary. It couldn’t be Eve because Eve had fallen. This passage also shows the sinlessness of Mary because of the enmity, the separation, the opposition God put between the Woman and her seed against the serpent and his seed. That means, the devil (serpent can not touch the woman and her seed. ) At the foot of the cross, He called her “woman” again and in Revelation 12:17; John 2:4; Galatians 4:4, Revelations 11:1-6. Jesus did not disrespect his mother. He wants to make that connection to all of us. Otherwise, He disrespected His own 4th commandment.

  9. Mary did not create Jesus, Jesus created Mary, and

himself through her. Keep this in mind, all things

were created through Jesus. He is not a created

being, but has eternally existed. This is why Jesus

could be referring to Mary is “Woman”, because God

truly has no Mother, as he is not a created being

    and has eternally existed.

  10. Mary gave birth to Jesus she was a vessel to bring Jesus into the world Jesus message was no one is more important than my father

    • I agree. Mary enfleshed the Second Person of the Trinity. No one is more important than God. Thank you for your comment.

  11. Jesus never called Mary His mother but instead He called Him Woman to show that He was God in Flesh and Mary was used as a canal for Him to be born in flesh. But On the cross before dying during crucifixion on Golgotha. He introduced instead Mary to John saying” Son, here is your mother” and to Mary, He said” Woman,”here is your Son”. That is to show to the world that He was not a normal human. He is God.

    • You are correct Jesus was not just a “normal Human.” He was God-Man. Both fullly God and Fully Man. However, He was incarnated in the womb of Mary and born a baby in the flesh. Baby Jesus needed to be loved and nurtured by Mary and Joseph, His mother and foster Father. Therefore, because Jesus is God Mary is the Mother of God. Not because she pre-existed the Trinity or any such nonsense, but merely because she mothered Jesus who is God.

  12. Yes He did! Luke 2:51 and when He was on the cross and gave her to John.

  13. Dear RC friends, you always defend the false doctrines you teach and believe. Here is a black and white proof from the catholic bible The Douay Rheims 1885. It says, [SHE], the Woman crushed the head of the serpent. Genesis 3:15 15 I will put enmities between thee and the woman, and thy seed and her seed: she shall crush thy head, and thou shalt lie in wait for her heel. This is a lie. Read the modern translations of Rc bibles.
If you believe that Mary is the new Eve. The new Eve cannot become new unless Christ the Saviour redeem her, forgives her sins. So the saviour was born in the womb of Mary by the Holy Ghost. It is because of this that she can be considered to be the new Eve. Not because she was born sinless or created sinless as Rc believe. This doctrine was proclaimed in 1854
Only person born without sin after the first sin is Christ Jesus, the Son of God. Bible says, all have sinned and fallen short of the glory of God. Rom 3:23
If Mary was created without sin then she is a goddess and the only person who did not need salvation from Christ. This is blasphemey, heresy. But Mary said in Lk 1:47 And my spirit has rejoiced in God my Saviour.
In verse 48 she says, Luke 1:48 48 For he hath regarded the low estate of his handmaiden: for, behold, from henceforth all generations shall call me blessed.
Why should she call her state as ‘low estate’ if she is already without sin. But because she is a sinner she calls herself a person of ‘low estate.
Lastly, if Rc hold the truth and has a holy Father the pope, why did they begin to kill and burn those that believe differently. Should they not examply Jesus and his apostles.
I was treated like a dog by Rc priest, my own family and neighbours. I was even thrown out of my business. They continue to do the same. Let me tell you, if Rc comes to power again, the will do worse. Mark my word. I love the Roman Catholics with the love of Jesus. Please seek for the truth and the truth will set you free.

    • Dear CVD,

Your point about the Genesis 3 passage is very interesting. The KJV, a Protestant translation uses “it”. Douay Reims uses “her” but most translations use “he”. I would have to ask a Hebrew translator why all the discrepancy. My guess is that the pronoun is indeterminate.

KJV 3:15 And I will put enmity between thee and the woman, and between thy seed and her seed; it shall bruise thy head, and thou shalt bruise his heel.

But regardless, it was HER Seed that crushes Satan not Mary herself but through Mary. Thus there is a lot of art showing Mary crushing the head of the snake. We do not believe that Mary ALONE or in her own power defeated Satan. Not at all. If you wish to believe the worst about the Catholic Church so be it. But the accusation is not supported by our doctrine.

The Doctrine of the Immaculate Concepetion of Mary was dogamtically proclaimed in 1854. True. But that is not when we first believed Mary was sinless. They always beleived it. Catholics are NOT that gullible and naive to swallow such a doctrine out of the blue. You are just not familiar with how dogmatic proclamations work. For instance, we have always believed that marriage is between one man and one woman. But with all the confusion these days around homosexuality, marriage and gender….the Catholic Church may soon have to make a Dogmatic Proclamation that marriage is between one man and one woman. If that was done in 2025 it would not mean that the Catholic Church only began to teach that marriag i between a man and a woman in 2025. But due to confusion in the 2000’s she finally had to clarify dogmatically.

Being created without sin does not in any way imply diety. Mary is absolutely NOT a goddess. She is merely a creature. Adam and Eve were both created without sin and without a sin nature, but that did NOT make them gods. It is just because as a Protestant you are accustomed to associating sinlessness with diety. But that is not the full truth as the case of Adam and Eve shows. And there is no scripture that asserts only gods are sinless.

Yes, It is true that Mary calls God her savior. So, the Protestant interpretation is understandable. However, there is another way to look at it. Mary certainly did need to be saved from the human plight of a sin nature. However, she was saved from sin before she sinned unlike the rest of us who have been saved after we sinned.

Regarding Mary’s low estate it could be b/c she was an unworthy sinner but scripture nowhere explains that sinfullness was the reason for her being of low estate. You are merely guessing. Mary was from a poor family and that can equally be the reason she considered herself to be of low estate.

The Catholic Church did not “kill and burn” people. The government used the Chruch to determine heresy and then the government, executed people. But the fact that sinful Catholics sinned should not surprise you. They have brought shame on the Catholic Church, just like the priest scandal. But what those priests and Bishops did was sin. It was rebellion against what the Chruch teaches. The Church did not teach them to do the evil they did centuries ago, in this century or what ever Catholics might have done to you. I am sorry but they do not correctly represent Jesus. The truths of the Catholic Church are still true no matter how badly Catholic sinners sin.

  14. Mary was never meant to be the mother of our Lord Jesus. God loved Mary and gave her the honour of carrying His Son.
Mary was more like a guardian. Remember, that, God does not have a mother.
Catholics love to call Mary the mother of God. Wouldn’t that elevate Mary to a position higher than Lord Jesus Himself.
Catholics believe that Mary was coronated queen of heaven and earth. A second god ?. This breaks the first law of God.
Thou shall not put other gods before me. And the pope even bows down before a statue of Mary and worships it.
Breaking the second law of God. Do not make for thyself an image of things in heaven, on or beneath the earth surface or beneath
    the waters and worship them.

    • No need to re-invent every generation. The first Christians already addressed this Christology question. The “Theotokos” was ancient, and the essential truth of the two natures of Christ was debated expansively at the Council of Ephesus in 431 A.D. The finite human mind cannot fully grasp the mystery that is God. It will be a big mistake to think that one can know better than the Church (See Acts 15). We have a heritage. Study Christian history …

    • Dear Christian,
Mary was the mother of Jesus, Jesus is God. Therefore, Mary is the Mother of God/Jesus/ the God-man.

Where in Scripture does it say that Mary was not Jesus’ mother but only a guardian?

Who nursed Jesus? Who changed His diaper? Who taught Him to walk? Who cooked His meals? Who made His clothes? Who kissed His boo boos? Mary.

Calling Mary “The Mother of God” was a title given to Mary in the first centuries of the Church to counter the heresy that proclaimed Jesus was NOT divine. The purpose of the title is to proclaim the Divinity of Jesus! It does not proclaim or call Mary divine; only her Son.

Mary is the Queen Mother of the KING. This is an OT designation to dignify Mary and Proclaim her Queen, since it is fitting that Kings also have Queens. It in NO WAY implies that Mary is also a God.

We do NOT worship Mary. Bowing down to her picture or statue does NOT signify worship, unless you also ascribe to anyone who bows to any one or any thing as worshipping a diety. Bowing/kneeling to kings for instance. You say correctly that worship of anything on earth, in the heavens or under the sea is forbidden. But making images of any of those things is NOT forbidden. How do I know this? Because God asked that His temple be adorned with the images of many earthly flora and fauna.

  15. She cannot hear u, only trough THE LORD JESUS.

  16. From the comments here Mary has been variously referred to as a canal for Jesus’ birth, , a guardian, and more, but perhaps we can consider her a foster mother, an adoptive mother or more likely a SURROGATE mother. All these types of “mothers” would traditionally nurse a baby, change his diaper, teach him to walk, cook his meals, make his clothes even kiss his boo boos even if the babies are not genetically their own. There is no verse where Jesus Himself called or referred to her as his mother although He obviously so loved her that He tasked John of her care as He was dying on the cross. But even at that point of dying, He referred to her as ‘woman’. not mother. She can not be the new Eve and He the new Adam. That will be an incestuous relationship.

    • Mary was absolutely the Mother of God. Because she was the Mother of Jesus who is God. She was not,by definition, a foster mother, surrogate mother, or an adoptive mother. She was impregnated by the Holy Spirit, nurtured the baby in her womb and gave birth to Jesus. We do not know that Jesus never called her “mother” bc we have not idea about every word that came from Jesus. Only what was preserved in the Gospels which is a tiny fraction of all that he did and said. And we know this b/c John says:

      John 21:25
But there are also many other things which Jesus did; were every one of them to be written, I suppose that the world itself could not contain the books that would be written.

In the gospels, Jesus calls her Woman, for the precise reason of identifying her as The New Eve. It was not an incestuous relationship, b/c Mary was the QUEEN Mother of Jesus the KING.
