Will Good Works Save Atheists, According to Pope Francis?

Reblogged from CATHOLIC VOTE

Pope Francis raised a lot of eyebrows Wednesday after saying all people who do good works, including atheists, are going to heaven.

At least, that’s how the Huffington Post interpreted Pope Francis’ Wednesday morning homily.

Here’s what Pope Francis really said about atheists:

Pope Francis

Stephen Driscoll / CNA

The Lord has redeemed all of us, all of us, with the Blood of Christ: all of us, not just Catholics. Everyone! ‘Father, the atheists?’ Even the atheists. Everyone! And this Blood makes us children of God of the first class! We are created children in the likeness of God and the Blood of Christ has redeemed us all! And we all have a duty to do good. And this commandment for everyone to do good, I think, is a beautiful path towards peace. If we, each doing our own part, do good to others, if we meet there, doing good, and we go slowly, gently, little by little, we will make that culture of encounter  that so much. We must meet one another doing good. ‘But I don’t believe, Father, I am an atheist!’ But do good: we will meet one another there.

Apparently, HuffPo doesn’t understand the difference between redemption and salvation because here’s how they reported on the pope’s remarks:

Pope Francis rocked some religious and atheist minds today when he declared that everyone was redeemed through Jesus, including atheists…

Of course, not all Christians believe that those who don’t believe will be redeemed, and the Pope’s words may spark memories of the deep divisions from the Protestant reformation over the belief in redemption through grace versus redemption through works.

As usual the media doesn’t get Catholic theology. You can read the rest of the article —HERE

  1. Pam, just more proof that you, your family, and everybody who reads this blog needs to get saved today!! TODAY IS THE DAY OF SALVATION!! Ask Jesus to come into your live, forgive your sin, and be the leader of your life. Your sin will be washed away with the Blood of Calvary. If you believe in your heart and confess with your mouth that Jesus is the Savior of the word, you will be saved. Nothing is better than that. Thank you for letting me share. P

    • Dear Paul, don’t worry I have done all that you suggest decades ago.

      • I’m not talking about any kind of church saved, yours or mine. I’m talking about washed in Saviors blood saved.

        • Don’t worry Paul. I have been washed in the blood of the Lamb and asked Jesus into my heart. I have been baptized by sprinkling and full immersion and for the outpouring of the Holy Spirit I became and Athiest in college and recommitted my life to Christ in my Senior year. Then I got married and had seven Children. Then, finally I found peace and rest in the Catholic Church. You might want to read my conversion story….if you dare.

        • I just re-read Pam’s testimony again and it’s always so inspiring and endearing. Paul, you should read it too so that you can at least get to know Pam better.

          • We are not supposed to be a force for the Catholic Church, we are supposed to be a force for the good news Gospel of Jesus Christ. And yes Pam, it is that cut and dry. We have work to do. The harvest is plenty and the labors are few. It’s going to hurt for a while, but yes they didi lie to us. They dug a hole for themselves that they can’t get out of, but that doesn’t mean we have to stay in there with them.

          • Thanks Surkiko, thanks Pam. The lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world, rocks my world. The rest of the smoke and mirrors, I’ll take a pass on. Francis has the atheists going to heaven. You’re not going to spin this because I have the exact wording right in front of me.
I’ve got you hooked,I’m going to squeeze the good news right out of you. I’m going to make you say uncle. I’m going to reel you in, and I’m not going to let go. Then we, and I mean we, are going to work telling the whole world that Christ died for our sins. And that we need a Savior. And we’re going to leave all the other junk behind. No room for it. Yes it is that cut and dried. Jesus said “IT IS FINISHED” you need the council of nothing. And that’s the way it’s going to be. PERIOD. Thanks

  2. The blood of Christ was shed for salvation and yes available for all …BUT …to those who received Him and believed in His Name…per John 1… to those only he gave the right to become Children of God….key words “become” ..before they did that they were Not Children of GOd…just creatures made in the image and likeness but lost and fallen ….It is the faith( that changes us so that we receive this gift earned at the cross ..and become Children of God.
Without that faith in HIm…they will die in their sins…Read John chap 1…SIMPLE …just read it …..do good works all you want…but without faith in Christ …you reject HIs Work and then good works of men are just filthy rags it will not count for the eternal kingdom. Good works will only reap crowns and rewards for those IN CHRIST. We do good works as a response to what Christ already did…and not to evoke a response from God…He already responded in Christ…dont get it upside down!!!!

    • Dear Jim,
But we are all children of God in the sense that we were created in His image and likeness. Meaning He created us and He loves everyone. He loves Atheists, Muslims, Protestants, Catholics, Buddists etc. He loves all of us because HE IS A LOVING FATHER. Because of His love for us he offers everyone salvation through His Son Jesus Christ and His Church which brings the whole Gospel to the world.

Salvation is offered to all people. And those who receive become Children of God in a closer and heaven-bound way. God is the one who will judge those who for various reasons were not faithful Christians. But that is God’s call. Not mine and not yours Our works will not save us only Jesus can save us.

My Lord loves all people and will judge with justice and mercy people who never heard the Gospel, or were inculcated to hate Christians and Christianity, or were betrayed by someone claiming to be Christian etc.

And your Lord? Will he send people who never heard the Gospel to Hell? Will he send all people to Hell who only knew of a very distorted Christianity? will he send Jews to Hell who vowed never to become Christian after a Christian neighbor betrayed them to the Nazi’s?

      • I agree with you God will alone judge…for instance Moses and Abraham never heard the name Jesus…they are in heaven no doubt….And God will bring whomever in …my concern is for those who have heard of Jesus …who have heard the Gospel and who for whatever reason reject HIM , they have no sense of a need for their sins…I am concerned for those …I fear that they have not BECOME children of God…Jesus said ” they will die in their sins!” and the angels will separate the wheat and chaff and then …well you know the rest

  3. Dear Jim,
Thank you so much for your clarification. I totally agree with you. They are definitely the ones we need to be concerned for and pray for and evangelize if the opportunity arises.
